When Hernán Cortés and his soldiers arrive on the year Reed One, Malintzín is sure he is fulfilling the ancient prophesy of Quetzalcoatl’s return. She is the key to changing an entire civilization.
Hernán’s magnetism, physical prowess and keen intellect prove him to be a powerful leader of men among men. Malintzín becomes his translator. Under her cultural tutorship and revelations of this land’s strategic secrets, Hernán starts to believe that he, indeed, has a divine destiny to conquer this ancient civilization and wonders if it’s possible against the tremendous odds they encounter. But Hernán’s dreams of being titled and receiving fame and fortune from his Spanish King motivates him to persist against all odds.
Malintzín and Hernán fall in love. They have a child, the first mestizo of the New World. The two endeavor to convince the indigenous people to join forces with Hernán and his Spaniards for without their help they will all surely die and the tortures, bloody sacrifices, cannibalism and slavery will continue. Many battles are fought. The Spaniards are victorious with their military training, metal armor and swords, cannon, and “fire sticks”, but especially their terrifying fighting horses trained for battle to bite, stomp and claw the enemy.
With Malintzín at his side as a guide, Hernán destroys Aztec idols and topples them down from their pyramids smashing them to pieces. Seeing that their idols are powerless, the people become convinced that Hernán is Quetzalcoatl returned to free them. They flock to his support by the tens of thousands and are trained in the Spanish techniques of war as they march onward towards the powerful city, Tenochtitlán, the heart of the Aztec Empire. Incredible wealth lies there. The salvation of the country lies there. Death also lies there – waiting for them!
Amongst the destruction, there is also beauty, pageantry, ritual, magnificent treasure, strange new creatures, fascinating music, miracles and magic. Hernán’s heart is captured by the soul of an entire civilization as he proceeds on his quest. He begins to feel he may, indeed, be the god, The Plumed Serpent, returned to bring the spirit of the One True God to this savage land. But liberating a land and achieving fame and fortune is bound to come at a heavy cost as Malintzín and Hernán’s lives, are in peril. So is their son’s.
Will Malintzín avenge her father’s death and see her people united under one benevolent God? Will Hernán be able to achieve his divine destiny without losing everything he’s risked in the process? Will the love between two lovers from different worlds survive?
